“Imagine a city where graffiti wasn't illegal, a city where everybody could draw wherever they liked. Where the street was awash with a million colours and little phrases... A city that felt like a party where everyone was invited, not just the estate agents and barons of big business”
- Banksy
MACA Museum presents ‘Banksy & Street Art: The Early Years’, an exhibition of rare drawings, stencils, photographs, and paintings which provide a fascinating and revealing insight into Banksy’s early history from 1989 – 2010.
The exhibition reveals the artists who influenced Banksy, from 1970s and 80s New York such as Dondi White, Futura 2000 and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Bristol graffiti legend Robert Del Naja, co-founder of the band Massive Attack.
We also explore Banksy’s working methods and creative processes during his early years as a freehand graffiti artist in his hometown of Bristol, to his meteoric rise as one of the most important artists of the 21st century.
Banksy’s public art installations continue to stimulate social and political commentary throughout the world alongside a new generation of international artists, including Stik, VHILS, Retna, Shepard Fairey, Dolk, Bambi, XOOOOX, Faile, Mode II, Mr. A, Herakut, Cres, SABE and many more.
